Q: What is a Credit Privacy Number (CPN) / Credit Profile Number (CPN) / Secondary Credit Number (SCN)?
A: A Credit Privacy Number (CPN) is 9 digit number that’s given out in place of one’s social security number for financial purposes. It’s used to protect one’s social security number and any personal & financial information that may be connected to it. It’s also known as a Secondary Credit Number (SCN) or Credit Profile Number.
Q: Is this legal?
A: Yes. According to the FBI website:
“Currently, federal law allows individuals to legally use CPNs for financial reporting and protects those individuals who do not wish to disclose their SSAN. Individuals who acquire CPNs are completely responsible for any debt they incur using this number.”Does that answer your question?
Q: Are these numbers from deceased or incarcerated people?
A: No. Although being incarcerated can affect social security benefits, the numbers aren’t re-assigned anywhere. Social security numbers of the deceased are placed the Social Security Death Index database and are a matter of public record.
Q. Is this file segregation?

Q: Can I use the CPN to rent an apartment?

A: Yes. Criminals still have rights.
Q: Can I use this number instead of my social security number?
A: When using on financial documents for credit reporting purposes, yes. However, it’s not an alternate social security number. It’s not to be used on government documents.
Q: Am I responsible for the debts on my old report?
A: Absolutely. A CPN is not credit repair because all your debts still exist. You’re still obligated to pay all of it back. The number only creates a new credit profile and does not replace your old credit history.
Q: Can I use my ID with the CPN.
A: It would be better to rephrase the question to: Should I use my ID with my CPN? That answer is: It depends. You must know what the ID is being used for so you avoid merging your accounts.
